The Garden Press: Botanical Printmaking
the art room and STEAM LABS
Nature is the ultimate artist in this class where we transform garden botanicals and vegetables into unique printing plates. We’ll explore a buffet of ferns, leaves, and cool-looking veggies like bok choy to see nature’s hidden “skeletons.” Students will learn the delicate skill of applying ink to these organic specimens to capture their intricate textures. Using hand-burnishing and manual pressure, we will transfer these natural patterns directly onto paper. It reveals tiny details, like leaf veins, that are usually invisible to the naked eye.
THE ART OF THE IMPRESSION
Printmaking with plants is a “direct transfer” technique that captures nature’s thumbprint. Instead of drawing a leaf, we ink the back of a real leaf to highlight its raised veins and textures. We then place it face-down on our paper and apply even pressure—either with a roller, a manual press, or even a heavy book—to “pull” a mirror-image print. This method teaches children about pressure, ink consistency, and the “reveal,” where the hidden details of a plant suddenly appear as a professional-looking art piece. It’s a magical way to turn a simple garden walk into a repeatable, scientific art project.
OUR STUDIO MATERIALS
At our studio, we believe every artist needs the right foundation to grow. We provide recycled white craft paper for bold experimentation and ‘practice runs,’ allowing kids to play without the fear of wasting ‘good’ paper. For their final masterpieces, students graduate to heavyweight mixed media paper that holds pigment beautifully and won’t buckle under ink. We use high-quality, student-safe inks that provide rich color without the toxic fumes of traditional solvents. This balanced approach keeps our classes accessible while ensuring the final results are something your child will be proud to hang on the wall.
