Precision & Peel: The Math of Geometric Art

the art room and STEAM LABS

Learn how to create crisp, professional-looking geometric art using the magic of “resist.” Students apply artist tape in intricate patterns to create grids, stars, or abstract shapes. Once the tape is down, we layer vibrant paints across the entire surface, covering the tape completely. The magic happens during the “big reveal” when the tape is peeled back to show perfect white lines. This project teaches patience, planning, and the mathematical concept of negative space.

What We’ll Do in Class

In this session, we investigate the ‘hidden blueprints’ of the world around us. For our younger artists, this is an exercise in shape-spotting and hand-eye coordination as they map out their first geometric foundations. For our older students, we elevate the challenge to explore Tessellations and Structural Geometry. By layering tape to create interlocking polygons, they learn how shapes can fit together without gaps—a concept found in everything from honeycombs to bathroom tiles. This ‘Sharp Lines’ approach teaches that art isn’t just about color; it’s about the mathematical bones that give a design its strength and rhythm.

OUR STUDIO MATERIALS

At our studio, we believe every artist needs the right foundation to grow. We provide recycled white craft paper for bold experimentation and ‘practice runs,’ allowing kids to play without the fear of wasting ‘good’ paper. For their final masterpieces, students graduate to heavyweight mixed media paper that holds pigment beautifully and won’t buckle under ink. We use high-quality, student-safe inks that provide rich color without the toxic fumes of traditional solvents. This balanced approach keeps our classes accessible while ensuring the final results are something your child will be proud to hang on the wall.
